In 2000, the number of physicians in the county per 1,000 population was 2.9, compared with the 1.9 state average. Athens-Clarke County had 5.6 hospital beds per 1,000 population in 2000, which was greater than the statewide average of 3.1 beds per 1,000 population.

St. Mary's Hospital emphasizes six medical specialties: Neurosciences, Orthopedics, Women's Health, Children's Health, Gastroenterology and Care for an Aging Population with over 300 beds available. St. Mary's introduced the first StealthStation neurosurgical platform to Northeast Georgia, providing a highly accurate way for surgeons to perform certain procedures on the spine and brain.
